Dog “Periods”? The Truth Every Pet Owner Should Know 😱

If your female dog suddenly starts bleeding, many pet owners panic and think something is wrong.
But in most cases, this is completely normal.
Dogs don’t have “periods” like humans. Instead, they go through a reproductive cycle called Estrous Cycle, commonly known as the heat cycle.
Unlike humans, who menstruate every month, female dogs usually enter heat only twice a year.
During this phase: • the body prepares for pregnancy
• hormones change
• mild bleeding can occur
• male dogs become strongly attracted
The heat cycle usually lasts about 2–4 weeks.
If you don’t plan to breed your dog, veterinarians often recommend spaying (surgical sterilization) to prevent unwanted puppies and reduce certain health risks.
Understanding your pet’s body helps you care for them better.
